Efficacy of a Self-Help Manual with Pathological Gamblers

This project will test the efficacy of a self-help workbook in reducing problem gambling behaviors. Results from this study will assist OPG in validating and creating cost-effective treatments that will be available to all California residents.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a telephone helpline for pathological gamblers (June 2006-December 2009)
This project will evaluate the effectiveness of a brief telephone intervention with problem and pathological gamblers. The helpline is managed by the California Council on Problem Gambling. Results will assist OPG in understanding which problem gamblers benefit from brief interventions and which ones require more intensive treatment.

Nalmefene in the Treatment of Pathological Gambling. A Placebo Controlled Dose-Response Study (2001-2003)
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of Nalmefene in treating pathological gambling. UGSP served as one of the investigation sites for this clinical trial. Results from this trial have been published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Topiramate in the treatment of pathological gambling: A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled and flexible-dose study.
(December 2003 – October 2005)
UGSP participated in a multi-site study. The purpose of the study was to determine if Topiramate is safe and effective in the treatment of pathological gambling.
