An Examination of Internet Gambling Patterns and Video Game Behaviors Among University Students

The UCLA Gambling Studies Program will be administering surveys to UCLA students to examine the Internet Gambling patterns and video game behaviors among university students. This study seeks to document the prevalence of Internet gambling addiction as well as video game addiction among university students, while also examining the characteristics and profile of students who engage in these activities.

Betting on Our Future Project
(March 2007 - present)
With the support of the Office of Problem Gambling(OPG), Friday Night Live Partnership, and Youth Leadership Institute, several counties in California will be creating and presenting youth-led video and dramatic performances on problem gambling. UCLA Gambling Studies Program (UGSP) will be evaluating the effectiveness of these presentations on raising awareness among young people and the community about both potential risks and existing resources (i.e. support groups) associated with youth gambling/problem gambling.

Evaluating outcome measures from an integrated treatment program for pathological gambling
(June 2006 - Present)
Data from the Robert and Lillian Custer Center will be analyzed to review predictors of treatment success and failure. The Custer Center is an integrated treatment program for pathological gambling.

The State of US Medical School Education on Pathological Gambling (February 2006 - Present)
In partnership with Midwestern University, UGSP is conducting a survey of US medical schools to determine how many include teaching about pathological gambling within the four-year curriculum. Results from this project will inform UGSP about the barriers and gaps to teaching medical students about pathological gambling.

The Impact of Gambling on Los Angeles Asian Communities
(July 1, 2005 – Present)
The UCLA Gambling Studies Program (UGSP) and the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council are collaborating on a project to document the impact of gambling on Asian communities in Los Angeles. Specific objectives are: 1) to determine the impact of gambling on Asian communities in Los Angeles with an emphasis on documenting its effects on children, youth and families; 2) to characterize differences in gambling patterns which will identify Asian communities who are at-risk to develop gambling problems; and 3) to raise awareness about problem gambling within Los Angeles Asian communities. This project is funded by a grant from the UCLA Center for Community Partnerships.

Final Report for Technical Assistance Project: The Impact of Gambling on Asian Pacific Islanders in Los Angeles
